Out and about in Portrush Portrush is a peninsula, stretching out into the Atlantic and ending at Ramore Head. This headland has a scenic walk along the cliff edge from where a panoramic view
of the coast is afforded. To the Northeast, Scotland with the Isles of Islay and Jura, is
clearly visible on a good day. To the west, beyond Portstewart, the Inishowen peninsula with Malin head can be seen most days.
To the east, Portrush is sheltered by the Skerrie Islands, beyond which Rathlin Island and sometimes the Mull of Kintyre are visible. Also
to the east of Portrush, the East Strand which starts at the base of the peninsula stretches to the White
Rocks, an amazing collection of cliffs and caves formed from limestone. A short distance beyond the White Rocks is Dunluce Castle, precariously perched right on a basalt cliff top. In 1639 the majority of the
kitchen fell into the sea along with the kitchen staff during a banquet on a stormy night. The next
town is Bushmills, home to the oldest licensed distillery in the world. Tours are run every day. www.bushmills.com Also
from Bushmills is a genuine narrow guage steam train offering return trips to the Giants Causeway. The Giants
Causeway is Irelands most popular visitor attraction! It is recognised as a World Heritage Site. With
over 40000 Basalt colums and unique rock formations, it is well worth a visit.
